Summer Idyll

Letting the world move through me
as the soft, faintly cooling breeze
rustles through tree tops
and the swathe of blue-green grasses below,
their pale straw-coloured heads curved gracefully outward.

I sit and gaze over the greenery
dipping down the valley below and rising
on the other side.
This soft beauty –
Why does it seem such a luxury?

Mine has been a life imprisoned
by the harshness of suburbia –
all concrete hardness and jarring straight lines
curtailing the horizon,
limiting my vision.
That frenzied jumble of people
that the most of us
now live in. A legacy of progress.

I must be simple to desire
that all my days are surrounded
by this green softness.
Yes, give me growing, living earth
and quietude.

That is all.
Just this.
Then if I die, my soul will be replete.

  1. Yes – feel the breathing out of arriving home in the green. Thanks for reminding my body.. even as I sit here in suburbia at my computer.
