Conundrum

The world is too tricksy for me to comprehend.
I listen to smarter folk discuss the state of the world.
They dissect obtuse theories of reality and speak eloquently in metaphor.

My simple mind cannot keep up.
As much as I long to discern from their wisdom
a place to take a stand for our ravaged earth,
everything seems too blurry,
too entwined to disentangle something worth fighting for.

All I know of what is good
is the welcome feel of soft earth cloaked in green grass beneath bare feet,
the delight of hearing a choir of birdsong all around
and that particular loosening as bright day gives way
to the restful darkness of night.

It seems hopelessly inadequate but
instead of endlessly consuming news alerts
and analysing the systemic problems of our time
I would rather dwell on
the expansive wonderment of a star-filled sky,
the hypnotic sight and sound of water flowing over a rocky creek bed
and how a listening friend can help heal a hurt.

So I will leave the machinations of the world to the smarter folk
and instead rest awhile with the earth, stars and a friend or two.
It is the best I can offer in this time of dying
and possibilities yet to be born.
